The course seeks to provide knowledge to the participants about the concepts of gender and bestows a critical overview about the way that the category gender is placed in development at the levels of policy making. Gender is an important consideration in development. It is a way of looking at how social norms and power structures impact on the lives and opportunities available to different groups of men and women. Globally, more women than men live in poverty. Gender is a complex variable that is a part of social, cultural, economic and political contexts. It is also relevant for the work of civil society movements.
Gender refers to socially constructed differences between men and women. Women are also less likely than men to receive basic education and to be appointed to a political position nationally and internationally. Understanding that men and women, boys and girls experience poverty differently and face different barriers in accessing services, economic resources and political opportunities helps to target interventions. The Gender and Development (GAD) approach followed, focusing on larger inequities and unequal relations. GAD advocates called for a deeper understanding of the socially constructed basis of gender differences and how this impacts on relationships between men and women. They argued for an improved understanding of power relations and the gendered nature of systems and institutions which impact on the lives of women and men. Rather than incorporating women into the current patriarchal system, GAD advocates argued for the transformation of the system into one characterised by gender equality.
This course will develop understanding of gender in a holistic perspective and the role of society /Culture in gender construction, theoretical understanding with the knowledge of basic theories of Gender and development. Participants will understand the problems/issues and challenges regarding gender and development. This course will enable them to understand that gender considerations in development enhance sustainable development.

The course is unique because it is covering very sensitive topic “Gender in development” it focuses on connections between gender and development initiatives and feminists’ perspectives, and deals with issues such as health and education, decision making and leadership, peace building, violence against women and economic empowerment. Development cannot be realized without the very significant component of gender. Countries the world over have proved that exclusion of women in development has rendered their development efforts futile.
